Walthon W. “Walt” Brandt, 88, passed away Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at Guest House of Slidell.

He was the beloved husband of Beverly Vernon Brandt for the past 65 years; father of Kathleen Brandt Chagnard (Raymond) of Pensacola, Fla., Robert C. “Bob” Brandt (Barbara) of Slidell, Kenneth W. “Kenny” Brandt (Kim) of River Ridge, Leslie A. Brandt Minton (Randall) of Hattiesburg, Miss., and Marilyn A. Brandt Ryan (Kerry) of Milford, Ohio. He was the son of the late William I. Brandt and Alma Whalen Brandt. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

He was a native of New Orleans and a resident of Slidell for the past 11 years. Walt served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a retired sheet metal mechanic with the Sheetmetal Worker’s Local Union 11. He was an avid lifetime baseball player and coach and was an umpire with NORD Umpire’s Association. He also worked for 21 years as a pari-mutuel clerk at the New Orleans Fairgrounds. Walt was a devout Catholic and a former member and Past Grand Knight of the I.H.M. Council 4547. He was a wonderful husband and father who will be sorely missed by all his family and friends.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a memorial Mass at 2 p.m. today at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 1050 Robert Blvd., Slidell. Visitation will be at church from noon to 2 p.m. Interment will be held at a later date in St. Louis Cemetery No. 3 in New Orleans.

Donations should be sent to Habitat for Humanity in honor of Walt, in lieu of flowers.

Sheriff and Slidell police on the hunt for armed robber

The armed robber, who is suspected of two armed robberies last week on Brownswitch Road and Robert Boulevard in Slidell, is also suspected for the robbery of the Blockbuster Video store at the corner of Gause Boulevard and Military Road Wednesday afternoon.
