Mandeville sweeps Covington

Mandeville’s Lady Skippers swept the Covington Lady Lions 25-15, 25-14, 25-21 Thursday at CHS to close out District 4-I play.

MHS (24-9) finished district play with a 9-3 record tying St. Scholastica Academy for second place.

MHS’ Nichole Freeman turned in a strong performance with 20 assists, eight kills and seven digs. Sophomore Katie Lindelow came up big for the Lady Skippers with 22 kills, 19 digs and four aces. Kelsey Sparks pulled up six digs and added four kills with a block, while Jess Himel collected 15 digs. Hannah Campbell tallied 14 assists and Maddie Baker tallied seven kills.

Mandeville coach Christy Sanantonio was pleased with her team’s performance. “It was a nice win to close out district to earn a tie with St. Scholastica Academy for second place. Our team had a good night defensively with the help of Jess Himel, Camille Sistrunk and Katie Lindelow,” Sanantonio said.

CHS (9-13) under former long time Lady Lions’ head coach Debbie Adams, who returned this year, finished 3-9 in district. Adams said her young squad continued to improve during the season and is looking forward to the younger players ongoing development next season.

CHS’ Rachel Smith blistered 22 kills, 16 digs, three blocks and three assists. Caroline Smith netted 25 assists for the Lady Lions. Katie Robbins pulled up 18 digs and knocked down 12 kills. Zhaniece Parker contributed eight kills, four blocks and three digs. Holly Stewart chipped in with 18 digs and her twin sister Hallie added 17 digs.

Adams said with the Stewart twins on the court, it is like having two liberos (defensive specialists), which is pretty good.

Slidell tops Northshore

Slidell’s Lady Tigers defeated the Northshore Lady Panthers 20-25, 25-18, 27-25, 25-27, 15-12 in the regular season finale for both teams Thursday at SHS. The Lady Tigers (18-14) finish 4-8 in district, while Northshore (11-14) was also 4-8 in league play.

Northshore’s Alexa Hardy logged 15 digs, seven kills, four blocks and one ace. Tory Hearn tallied 12 kills, nine digs, three blocks and three aces. Lauren Davis posted 14 kills and four blocks, while Blair Doiron registered 39 assists, pulled up nine digs, four kills and two blocks. Rachel Eberhard had seven digs, while Sierra Bickham added nine kills, seven blocks and an ace. Katie Illg blocked five shots and totaled an ace.

No stats were available for Slidell.

Pearl River takes second in district

Pearl River’s Lady Rebels finished runner-up in district after defeating district foe McDonogh 35 25-16, 25-18, 26-24 on the road Thursday. Pearl River (23-5) tallied an 8-2-district mark with both losses coming to league champion Chalmette. Katie Wallace served six aces and put down five kills, while Taylor Peterson pulled up 11 digs. Catie Bennett posted six kills. Carly Jordan passed for 13 assists and Miranda Craddock added a block.

Salmen finishes with a win

Salmen’s Lady Spartans wrapped up their regular season by sweeping Warren Easton 25-13, 25-15, 25-18 in a district road match held Thursday. Salmen (4-14) finishes district play at 3-7.

Aeriel Lara tallied 11 digs, while Natalie Jones had seven kills. Erika Ybarazabal posted six kills. Ariel Mutz dished out 14 assists, while Camilia Cardoso added five aces. Briana Brown blocked one shot.

PJP II sweeps Haynes Academy

Pope John Paul II’s Lady Jaguars wrapped up their regular season with a 25-16, 25-18, 25-21 victory over Haynes Academy in a non-district road match Thursday.

PJP finishes the regular season 11-17 overall and was 0-4 in district play.

Paige Bourquard recorded 11 kills, while Adriana Cutura pulled up eight digs. Ashley Lang blocked three shots and Christa Roscigno had two aces.

Jessica Gros registered 14 assists.�

Sheriff and Slidell police on the hunt for armed robber

The armed robber, who is suspected of two armed robberies last week on Brownswitch Road and Robert Boulevard in Slidell, is also suspected for the robbery of the Blockbuster Video store at the corner of Gause Boulevard and Military Road Wednesday afternoon.
