Slidell’s Tigers go against the Fontainebleau Bulldogs in their homecoming game tonight.

Both teams enter action attempting to snap losing streaks. Slidell (3-4, 1-3) has lost its last three contests, while Fontainebleau (1-6, 0-4) is on a six-game losing streak.

SHS suffered a 27-17 setback to Ponchatoula last week after leading 17-6 at halftime. Fontainebleau fell to Mandeville 12-10.

Despite the Bulldogs’ record, Slidell coach Artie Liuzza isn’t taking FHS lightly.

“They’re the best 1-6 team. They’ve lost a lot of close games,” Liuzza said. “They have a powerful defense. They’re well coached and they play great technique on both sides of the ball. They’re a good football team that hasn’t got a lot of breaks. Offensively, they do a good job to fit their personnel. Looking at them on film, they’re a typical Fontainebleau football team.”

The Bulldogs have lost four games by five points or less and the last three have all been by two points.

“My drive is, we’ve got to find a way to win,” FHS coach Mike Materne said. “We’ve found ways to lose, but we’ve got to find ways to win.”

One thing to watch for is the health of Bulldogs’ senior quarterback Addison Melancon, who has a high-ankle sprain.

Materne said it is unlikely Melancon will play. If he doesn’t sophomore Conner Smith will be under center. Materne said Smith’s coming along well.

“I’ve been impressed. He’s been giving our defense a good look the last month in practice,” Materne said.

Smith saw his first action last week and threw for 12 yards.

This season, Melancon’s recorded 716 passing yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions.

The Bulldogs have been mostly a running team. This year, Fontainebleau has 229-rushing attempts for 909 yards and 101 passes for 728.

Perrin Sims and Ryan Brooks lead Fontainebleau’s running attack.

Sims has 77 attempts for 463 yards and four touchdowns, while Brooks has run 82 times for 308 yards. Brooks also tied for second on the team with nine receptions for 115 yards and two touchdowns.

Chris Fisher also has nine catches, while going for 72 yards and a score.

James Cousin leads the Fontainebleau receivers with 13 receptions for 265 yards and two TDs.

Ryan Bernard’s added eight catches for 118 yards.

Defensively, the Bulldogs run a 3-4.

Last week, Thomas Babin and Will Ward led FHS with 12 tackles and seven solo stops apiece.

Steven Brown assisted on nine stops, while Justin Church totaled six tackles to go with a sack.

For Slidell, the Tigers run a spread offense with senior Randal Meyer at quarterback.

Last week, Meyer hit on 17-of-24 for 257 yards with two interceptions and a 65-yard touchdown pass to Chris Barnes.

The running backs are Jonathan Miles, Jaron Wiggins and Antonio Marshall.

Miles topped the Tigers last week with 78-ground yards on 17 carries and a touchdown. The wide receivers are Armand Williams, Derrick Comeaux and C.J. Hampton.

Last week, Williams made a 44-yard reception, which set up Miles’ scoring run. Defensively, the Tigers are multiple.

Last week, the unit held a potent Ponchatoula rushing attack to just six first-half points.

" this is a make or break game for slidell. the defense needs to play four quarters. the offense needs to run, run, run, than pass. slidell has been successful when they run. the passing game looks good on the stat sheet, but it's not winning games. the offense line is big and the running backs are fast. when is the coach going to realize this. with a quarterback having more interceptions than touchdowns, it's time to run. back to the basics. playoffs are just around the corner. Can slidell make it? the time is now to win a game. "
