CHS trims Peake on walk-off homer

Covington High’s Payden Lynch delivered a walk-off, two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning Thursday to lift the Lions to a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over Peake BMW (St. Paul’s) in a game played at Jimmy “Doc” Davis Field.

CHS’ Blake Taylor collected a two-out single and Lynch took care of the rest with his roundtripper. Facing a 1-2 count, he blasted a fastball over the left field fence for the game-winner.

Lynch said it was exciting when he reached home plate.

“Bo Tedesco jumped on my back and started pounding on my helmet. Everybody just went crazy,” Lynch said.

“Being behind, I was just thinking about getting a base hit to try and get a run. I got a high inside fastball and was able to take it out,” Lynch added.

Peake BMW (5-8) took a 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the second. CHS answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game.

Peake BMW tallied a run in the seventh to take a one-run lead, setting the stage for Lynch’s heroics. It was Lynch’s third homer of the season. Covington reliever Dexter Thompson (3-0) earned the victory.

Peake BMW starter Chris Smith turned in a strong effort, working a total of five scoreless innings, facing 19 batters. He gave up five hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Smith had a hit, walked twice and drove in a run. Aaron Allain went 2-3 with an RBI and scored once, while Harry Clay had a hit, drove in a run and scored a run. Tanner Rainey went 2-4 and scored once, while Dane Stubbs went 1-1 and tallied a run. Drew Francis and Shane Lacrouts chipped in with one hit each.

Peake BMW reliever John Gremillion (1-1) was tagged with the loss. He went two innings, allowing five runs on four hits.
