It’ll be a who’s who of high-school soccer this weekend as the 26th St. Paul’s Holiday Invitational Tournament kicks off today at the Covington Youth Soccer Fields before moving to St. Paul’s tomorrow and Sunday.

“It’s a heck of a tournament,” St. Paul’s coach Trevor Watkins said. “This year is perhaps the strongest field we’ve ever had. It’s the tournament to be at. It’s an invitational tournament, and we try to get the very best teams we can.”

The 16-team field features three local teams, St. Paul’s (9-3, 5-1), Fontainebleau (11-0-1, 6-0) and Mandeville (9-4, 4-2). Every team in this year’s tournament made the playoffs last season.

The competition has one state champion in Caddo Magnet (Division I), which captured last year’s event and beat St. Paul’s in last season’s state semifinals.

There are two teams that finished as state runner-ups, including Vandebilt Catholic (Division II) and Newman (Division III).

Three more squads got to the state semifinals in St. Paul’s (Division I), Jesuit (Division I) and St. Louis (Division III).

Watkins said there will be some tough matches.

“There’s really no game that will be easy, but that’s why people come to the tournament, to play the best,” Watkins said.

The teams are broken up into four brackets A, B, C and D. SPS is in bracket A, while FHS is in C and MHS takes part in D.

The semifinals tomorrow will match the winners of brackets A and B at 4 p.m. in Hunter Stadium. The victorious squads in C and D will meet at 6 p.m. tomorrow in Hunter Stadium.

The championship will feature the semifinal winners and is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday in Hunter Stadium.

St. Paul’s will play its two matches today. This morning’s contest is scheduled for 11:45 against Grace King on CYSA field D. Later on today, the Wolves will compete at 3:15 against Dutchtown on CYSA field B.

Tomorrow morning, SPS takes on Caddo Magnet in a re-match of last season’s state semifinals in Hunter Stadium at 10:45.

Fontainebleau will put its unbeaten record on the line, first against Captain Shreve at 11:45 a.m. today on CYSA field A. The Bulldogs return to action this afternoon at 3:15 in a contest with Vandebilt Catholic on field C at CYSA. FHS then meets Baton Rouge tomorrow afternoon at 2:15 in Hunter Stadium.

Mandeville begins by attempting to avenge a bi-district loss from last year when the Skippers meet Jesuit today at 10 a.m. on CYSA field C.

At 1:30 p.m. on CYSA field D, MHS takes on Acadiana before playing against St. Louis on the SPS varsity field tomorrow at 12:30.

Admission is $10 for all three days or $5 for each day.
